Our industry has a long history of cooperation in the operational domain. Despite increasing competition, cooperation between airlines still makes sense to share development and maintenance costs. For this reason, OpenAirlines encourages cooperation between airlines by promoting an original model: the Shared-Source Marketplace.
Airlines can contribute to the Shared-Source Marketplace through different models:
You have identified one of your application as having a potential interest for the industry. You would like to get revenue from it but do not have the commercial or support structure to leverage it.
If we are convinced that there is indeed an interest in the marketplace, we can sign a commercialization agreement with you where we negociate the rights to sell, modify, integrate and support your application for other airlines.
You get back royalties revenues from every sales and you can also benefit from products improvements.
In this model, airlines can licence donated applications for free: they just have to pay the maintenance fee.
In return, they have to give back all product improvements to the community.
And each contributor (initial donator or improver) is retributed by other airlines' usage.
This is the full open-source model. You donate your application to the marketplace within the frame of an open-source licence which guarantees that any modification/improvement made by another airline should be made public.
You get back improvements made by other airlines and better product continuation and industry support through its adoption.
OpenAirlines helps animate the open-source community and contributes to the development and its integration to make sure it evolves in a proper direction in terms of coherence and quality.
